Naomi Vos, a clinical therapy intern at Mid-Michigan Therapy in Lansing, MI, smiling in her counseling office

The challenges that impact our lives rarely exist in isolation. I recognize the powerful influence that relationships have on both individual and collective well-being, and I approach therapy from a systemic perspective. I strive to create a collaborative, calm, and supportive environment where clients can navigate conflict, improve communication, and strengthen meaningful connections.

Life can feel isolating and overwhelming at times. I believe therapy should be a space for connection, healing, and growth. In my work, I integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. I aim to foster a warm, inviting space where you feel understood, supported, and empowered in your journey.

Naomi's Introduction Video

In this video, Naomi shares her own therapy as the reason for becoming a therapist. She discusses common problems with kids and parents in therapy along with common problems she see in the couples she helps.

Video Transcript:

Interviewer: Naomi, tell us what made you want to become a therapist.

Naomi: My involvement in family therapy on a personal level has always been very helpful to me and um I have benefited greatly from the therapists that I have seen in the past and um my family members have as well and I decided that I wanted to um offer that sort of help. um to families, couples, and especially children and sibling groups.

Interviewer: You see a wide range of clients, kids, couples, and the whole family. When you are working specifically with kids and your their parents, what are some of the common problems that they're walking in your sessions with and how do you help?

Naomi: Often times I'm seeing conflict between either siblings or parents and children. Um, there's often behavioral challenges either related in a school setting, home, um, or all of the above. Um, I see children who are navigating emotions trying to emotionally regulate. So there's often outbursts or um, maybe labeled as tantrums. And um, for the parents there's often feelings of they've tried everything. Um, they are trying to implement um, you know, new ways to communicate with their children and they're often tired and trying to do the best for their kids. And what I really enjoy doing is trying to work to bridge the gap um of communication and um work with kids individually at times to navigate some of the um emotional regulation and ways that they can communicate what they need and what they're feeling; as well as working with the parents in the room to facilitate certain conversations and conflict resolution tactics that they can take back home as well.

Interviewer: Naomi, when you're working with couples, what are some of the com common problems those couples are walking into your sessions with and how do you help them?

Naomi: I'm often seeing couples who are struggling to connect with each other, um, who are struggling to communicate. There's often escalated conflict um which can lead to, you know, one partner um wanting to separate themselves for a while and one partner feeling anxious about the relationship. Um, and so I really enjoy working with partners on some of the needs that they have within a relationship, some of their prior history both in their family of origin and past relationships to navigate um certain aspects of their environment that have influenced um how they view relationships and how they present in relationships. Um, so some of the work that I do is practicing communication, having the couple practice communication in session with me as a mediator. Um, we often fill out worksheets to navigate strengths that the couple has and areas that they want to strengthen. Um, and we often do a lot of work with um, the attachment that partners have to each other and how to become closer and connect further as a couple.
